Kids! Finally! Beer! Finally!

For those who don't know, I've been training with Americorps for the last month. The training was only supposed to last a couple weeks, but since my site's camp doesn't begin until July 3rd we haven't had much to do. This week we started working with the 2nd grade after school program. Their program is over at the end of the week, but most of them will be coming to camp so we'll see them again.

We started out by reading with the kids. The boy I was working with tried to impress me a bit, picking up the Secret Garden first. It was a bit past his level, and the next one he picked, Husky in a Hut was more on target. He's still a very good reader (at least I thought so), and it'll be fun to work with him.

White Nights was a good time, as always. Great party, poorly run tournament, but then again we've come to expect that. I played handler all weekend long, squirreling around getting resets, bombing hucks, and breaking marks. Granted, it's just a crappy coed tournament, but I felt I was pretty successful at it, and it was a really good time doing it. I do wish that we were able to move the disc faster; we held it too way too long and then took shots that just weren't there, or were rushed. I started just cutting for the dump when the thrower wasn't looking, first up line where I'd either get the disc or the defender would block the lane so the thrower would have to turn and hit me. Kept the offense moving and was actually rather effective. I'm sure it frustrated the downfield cutter who got open (finally) around stall 8, but at least we kept the disc in our possession.
